The vision centre is located at Kurla (in the central part of Mumbai) and will be operated out of the spacious offices of a local community based organisation (CBO) called Shraddha Pratishthan. This local CBO has been working in the area since 2002 and has been actively involved in undertaking medical camps (with help of leading charitable hospitals of the city),donation of educational materials to needy students, community programmes, cultural and spiritual activities.
The majority of the population who reside in this area benefiting from the service of the NGO are small scale garment industries workers, auto- rickshaw drivers, daily wage workers and their families. Very few NGOs are working in this area.
They participated in the eye screening of patients, distributed eye glasses to them and visited a family in the community with a community health worker to carry out screening. A street play was then performed for the entire team who showcased how the underprivileged could also have an easy access to specialized eye care for a truly negligible cost. Mr. Meddings participated and got oriented with the vision centre procedures and also tried his hands at the process of door-to-door screening.
There were over 100 residents who attended the event;some who were present for follow up and collecting spectacles and many others who were referred to the vision centre for refraction by the health workers through door-to-door screening
